The Windmill palm is one of the hardiest palms in cultivation, capable of withstanding fairly severe freezes with no damage. In its native habitat, it may even receive a light winter snow cover. It is quite easily recognized by its fan shaped leaves and thin trunk covered with dark brown fiber. The Windmill palm can grow to 30 feet, but is quite slow growing and can be container grown for more than 15 years. It can handle temperatures to 22F degrees with little or no trouble. They respond well to Palm Granular 7-2-7 Fertilizer during the warm months and occasional applications of Copper fungicide will help retain optimum health. They are actually grown in the ground in coastal Washington State. (Photo from:http://palmheavennursery.com) |
