While this species of Christmas palm has become well established in parts of Florida, it is still quite a rarity in other areas. It is excellent for coastal areas and tolerates salt very well. The palm will grow to about 90 feet with a green crownshaft and stiff, arching fronds. Flowers are yellow and fruits turn bright red when ripe. Fruits are 1 - 1.5 inches in length. This palm is endemic to the island of Efate, Vanuatu. The cabbage of V. montgomeryana is widely eaten and has thus been reduced to great rarity in its native land. A true prize for the avid palm collector. |
