The original Marsh seed was planted in 1860 in Lakeland, Florida and was recognized, in 1886 by E. H. Tyson, as having potential commercially because of its taste and seedlessness. In 1889 it was offered for the first time to the public with no name, just simply, "seedless grapefruit." A few years later C. M. Marsh bought Tyson's grove and named the variety 'Marsh Seedless'. It is now called 'Marsh'. The fruit is of medium size when considering grapefruit. Marsh is a late variety, ripening from October through June and will hold its fruit well, on the tree, in the summer months. Marsh has long been a popular cultivar in Florida and throughout the world for its consistent, heavy yields, seedlessness and long harvest season. Trees usually grow to about 25 feet in as many years. Marsh is a seedling of Duncan Grapefruit. |
