Now grown extensively in the West Indies, Ginger was used to warm the stomach & stop chills. It has now taken on a culinary interest and is used frequently in Asian dishes, especially Sushi. The root--with the most heavenly scented lily--when harvested, is grated and cooked or eaten raw. It has a very spicy fragrance and taste. The plant grows by underground rhizomes and produces beautiful foliage to 6 feet tall, followed by white or pinkish-white flowers. Ginger can easily be grown in containers or in the ground from Zone 8a to 11. |
